Located on Elgin Street, the cheesemongers at La Latteria are renowned for their soft, creamy southern-Italian cheeses, which are hand-stretched daily. From Fiore Di Burrata to Fiore Di Latte, Scamorza, bocconcini and riccota, this mozzarella laboratory produces the finest and freshest products.
This zero-snobbery venue is perfect for those looking for an easy-going, relaxed affair. All the wines come from organically farmed grapes, and staff can discuss each bottle in great depth. Food is by the accomplished Ali Currey-Voumard , and the menu changes daily based on seasonal produce – although it tends to err towards comforting French classics. Like the rest of the menu, the cheese changes regularly, with one to three options available. You can expect the likes of a slightly sweet Mossvale Blue or a Jean Perrin Secret de Scey .
Unlike the former anonymous warehouse, the space is stuffed with character. While you won’t find any Penfolds on the densely packed shelves, there’s more than enough by way of compensation. Plazzer generally finds winemakers early in their lifecycle, stocking small producers who might have found their way onto restaurant wine-lists but not into retail stores. OPL as it's affectionately known by locals is in a vibrant area, make sure you take a stroll down Lygon Street before you split, there's a tonne of cocktail and wine bars to enjoy.
