Instead, leave the paints’ textures and streaks of different colors untouched. It’s fun to experiment with painting with other tools besides a brush. The trick to maintaining the texture is not to apply too much pressure to the knife. For this example, I used three colors to create a gradient, but you can use as many colors as you like; even one color will work. I squeezed them out onto my palette, then used a flat brush and repeatedly applied the paint on the canvas in tiny strokes, which should be positioned close to each other.

Once your diy abstract painting is completely dry, you are ready to add some finer detail to your canvas. Up to this point, most of the work has been in large brush strokes and blending.

If you hate what you paint, you can always cover over the painting with gesso and start over. Leave the paint texture there from your original painting for added interest, or sand it away before you gesso over it. Get as colorful or muted as you like, and paint from the center out. Start by painting a small, organic shape in the center . Paint around that with another color, and keep painting outward until you reach the edge of the canvas or board.
