Now it ranks only about 9th – there is apparently a tower almost twice its height going up in Saudi Arabia, due completion next year. It’s all about prestige and face in my down to earth opinion. Still it’s a bit of an icon especially in Taiwan and we had to visit it, despite the admission fee of $30 each. The tower’s elevators reach speeds of 60km, are extremely smooth and transport us from earth to heaven in 37 seconds. Set speed records in those days, probably now snail’s pace. The hotel was first established in 1952 as Chiang Kai-shek felt Taipei had no proper hotels for hosting foreign dignitaries.
This place is absolutely crowded, mostly young people and also families. A lot of sideshow type entertainment, food stalls, restaurants, souvenir shops and indeed shops of all descriptions. Fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable for a couple of hours before catching the bus back for a late dinner of dumplings and sautéed beef julienne in our chosen hotel restaurant. We travel on into the Yangmingshan National Park 台東地瓜酥 through winding roads gradually ascending until we reach the park’s Visitor Centre. It appears that the Centre is primarily there to give guidance to people hiking and there are many trails within the park and up the mountain. But the officers were also very helpful in directing us on to our next spot and the Centre has a wide range of exhibits on the history of the park and area, wildlife and volcanic activity.

Surrounding sights include the National Museum of Prehistory, the Taitung Railway Art Village and the Fu An Gong. The Haishan Temple and Tiehuacun are also within reach. Hop in the car and journey to Yushan National Park, 45 kilometres away from Chishang. You can also enjoy some fresh air at Liushidan Mountain, 16 kilometres away. With all facilities offered, J Resort is the right place to stay. Splendid service together with wide range of facilities provided will make you complain for nothing during your stay at J Resort.
Soon we were traversing the interior of the island to visit Noipe Village. The surprise warrior attack proved to be quite comical as warriors spent more time smiling and laughing rather than playing the role of the ferocious attacker. Following the national anthem and welcome speeches by village elders, Chris gave a heartfelt tribute to the villages in Maori, on behalf of theSpirit of Enderbytribe. We were ushered to the dance arena, where village leaders and chiefs circled the traditional dance pole and showcased their prized red feather money. Feather money is used in Santa Cruz as a form of currency and is predominately used for settling important obligations in both bridal wealth, mortuary celebrations and compensation payments .

Many of us were able to identify several of the fish groups we learnt about the day before, while others thoroughly enjoyed relaxing and taking everything in. Multicoloured christmas tree worms stood out on the coral boulders and feather duster worms were wide open feeding. Abundant pacific banded butterflyfish, regal angelfish, a variation of chromis and damselfish were circling the reef.
I remember walking through there it's a bit more upmarket if i remember correctly, more fancy malls and restaurants and stuff, family friendly. I think Daan Forest Park has like a playground kid friendly place to play, same with the other park (2/28 Peace Park) i think. Jiufen , jinguashi, Shifen, down to pingxi district to release the lanterns at night, then next day made it up to Keelung City just for the floating duck at the time and then to Yehliu Geopark and then the next day Taipei.
Cycle around Taitung Forest Park and its three lakes or take a boat to Green Island for snorkelling and soaking in saltwater hot springs. Inn by the Village is set in Taitung City and is within a short walk of nearby landmarks, including Tiehua Music Village. In addition to free private parking on site, the hotel offers comfortable 3-star rooms and a bar.

Also from Xiziwan you can catch the ferry over to Qijin island which is also a bit of fun – nice to hire a bike and ride around and lots of seafood restaurants. But yea i dunno really depends what your kids want right? Maybe they get bored by that stuff i dunno, guess it depends on their age as well. But i'd say the main thing with Taiwan is the food, markets and the natural landscape and nature based activities. There's hot springs near Taipei you could go to or you can release lanterns into the sky at Shifen or if you go to Taichung there's a great night market there and nearby is Rainbow Village or the theme park Lihpao Land.
