Taiwan International Balloon Festival is one of the most anticipated annual summer events since its launch in 2010. Decorated hot air balloons from all over the world float in the Luye Highland air. The Night Glow Concert series is held throughout the 2-month-long festival period at night.

Taitung is one of the most bike friendly cities in Taiwan. We witnessed many folk exploring the city on two wheels. If you are cycling from Highway 9, you will return the bikes before exploring the rest of Taitung. It looked like the chef had stuffed fish with cloves of garlic and other condiments, then doused in a thick layer of sea salt to bake. I worried about having the fish covered in salt, but the skin came right off.

If Yehliu has the Queen’s Head, Xiao Yehliu has mushrooms, tofu, etc. Lisong Hot Spring is a perfect destination for outdoor adventurers and hikers. The natural outdoor hot spring is secluded in the Xinwulu River Valley. It can only be reached by river tracing, rock climbing, and hiking.
Somehow, I forgot to get the London refrigerator magnet as souvenir. I chose London B because I visited the London Eye, rode on the double-decker bus, and went on one of the sightseeing cruises of Thames River. I love my souvenir even though I waited 3 weeks to get it. It has a delightful rose fragrance with a clean and fresh liquor.
We have listed more shop and eat options in itinerary but we did not have time to explore. So bringing home a few bottles of a local Taiwanese beer isn’t a bad conversation starter either. There are few branches of Yang Potato Zenfa Original shops all over Taitung which only sells sweet potato chips. Even our hotel was selling them and it seemed to be popular with locals and tourists alike. The chips are glazed with sticky sugar making it a bit messy to eat. A local famous shop with delicious mochi, flavored peanut, sesame, red bean, green bean, black bean, etc.
The old railway station in town plays host to Taitung Railway Art Village, which features rainbow-coloured paper lanterns and the works of local artisans. Pick up handicraft souvenirs and check the schedule for live aboriginal music shows. A former spur-line station once brought trains into the center, the former station is now part of a vibrant urban renewal project, the 'Railway Art Village'.
Unfortunately, Hight Speed Rail does not travel through the mountainous East Coast.
The East of Taiwan is much less developed than the West. That said, you will not find many big international hotel brands here. On the bright side, you will get to experience local hospitality from independent hotels and homestay (called “minsu”).
It is the best and most efficient way to enjoy the East. Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Zhengqi and Bo’ai roads, this market is a great spot to grab souvenirs, try authentic Taiwanese food and get to know the local way of life. Although you can get a train from Zhiben (知本站) or Kangle station (康樂站), we would recommend first timers to stick to Taitung Station. But when you mention the hot air balloon, seawater hot spring or Mr Brown avenue ( 池上 Chisang), Taitung will ring a bell .
