Zhongli is a convenient centrally located city in northern Taiwan about 60kms south of Taipei. You can train it or bus it here from Taipei using the easy card. They have a really good night market and you can also use this city as a staging point for touring Taoyuan county. There is also a tourist bus operating from the bus station that operates like a hop on hop off service which will take you to some interesting places. Alishan, sunmoon lake are popular tourist areas, taipei is fun with great museums and monuments, kaohsiung is more typical of local minnan culture and modern.
